Russia is facing a \u2018transgender epidemic\u2019 fueled by propaganda and foreign funding, Olga Bukhanovskaya has said<\/strong><\/p>\n

A distinguished Russian psychiatrist has classified transgender identity as a mental illness during a major medical congress in Russia.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the 18th Congress of Psychiatrists of Russia last week, Olga Bukhanovskaya, chief physician of the Phoenix Medical and Rehabilitation Scientific Center in Rostov-on-Don, introduced the concept of a \u201ctransgender spectrum disorder.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIf people now use the nice-sounding phrase \u2018autism spectrum disorder\u2019 then we can say \u2018transgender spectrum disorder\u2019 and all of these mental illnesses fall under it,\u201d<\/em> Bukhanovskaya said.<\/p>\n

The proposed category includes five distinct conditions: \u201chomosexuality,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u201cfetishistic transvestism,\u201d<\/em> a term describing cross-dressing linked to sexual arousal, \u201cpersonality disorders,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u201cschizotypal disorder,\u201d<\/em> and \u201cschizophrenia with periodic effeminacy,\u201d<\/em> which refers to intermittent feminine behavior or traits in men.<\/p>\n

Bukhanovskaya, daughter of the late psychiatrist Aleksander Bukhanovsky, who created the psychological profile of the infamous Ukrainian serial killer Andrey Chikatilo, also described Russia as facing a \u201ctransgender epidemic\u201d<\/em> fueled by propaganda and foreign funding.<\/p>\n

She accused what she called a \u201cfifth column of medicine\u201d<\/em> of promoting transgender rights, saying \u201ctrans-LGBT-friendly doctors,\u201d<\/em> psychologists and lecturers were indoctrinating patients and the wider medical community.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in 1990. Under the WHO\u2019s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), the global diagnostic manual used by doctors and health systems worldwide, transsexualism was also removed from the category of mental illnesses when updated standards took effect in 2022.<\/p>\n

Moscow suspended its planned transition to ICD-11 in 2024, saying some provisions conflicted with the country\u2019s traditional values.<\/p>\n

In 2023, after Russia adopted a law banning \u201cmedical interventions aimed at sex change,\u201d<\/em> the Russian Society of Psychiatrists drafted clinical guidelines on \u201cgender identity disorders.\u201d<\/em> The document acknowledged that transgender people could not be \u201ccured\u201d<\/em> and recommended psychotherapy support instead.<\/p>\n

In recent years, Russia has taken steps to promote traditional values and banned \u201cLGBT propaganda,\u201d<\/em> designating the international movement as \u201cextremist.\u201d<\/em> Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, have argued that Western-promoted LGBTQ agendas seek to \u201cerode, erase, and subjugate\u201d<\/em> the values and identities of other countries.<\/p>\n

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that non-traditional relationships between adults remain a private matter, though he has stressed that their promotion, especially among minors, is prohibited.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
