Latvia\u2019s membership in the bloc will not protect it from Russian retaliation, the Foreign Intelligence Service has warned<\/strong><\/p>\n NATO member Latvia has given Ukraine permission to use its territory for potential drone attacks against Russia, Moscow\u2019s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has said.<\/p>\n Ukrainian UAVs have targeted northwestern Russia on numerous occasions in recent weeks, particularly energy facilities in Leningrad Region, although some of the drones eventually crashed in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Finland.<\/p>\n The SVR said in a statement on Tuesday that Ukraine \u201cdoes not intend to limit itself to using the air corridors provided to the Ukrainians armed by the Baltic states.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThe plan is to also launch the UAVs from the territory of these countries\u201d<\/em> against Russia in order \u201cto significantly reduce the time it takes to reach the targets and increase the effectiveness of the terrorist attacks,\u201d<\/em> the statement read.<\/p>\n Ukrainian drone operators have already been deployed to Latvia at the Adazi, Selija, Lielvarde, Daugavpils, and Jekabpils military bases, the agency said.<\/p>\n \n Read more<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Kiev persuaded Riga to agree to the operation by falsely claiming that it would be impossible to identify the exact launch site of the drones, the SVR said.\u00a0<\/p>\n The agency expressed bewilderment about the \u201cnaivety\u201d<\/em> of the Latvian authorities, pointing out that modern reconnaissance methods and study of debris means the location from which a UAV was launched can be pinpointed with high accuracy.<\/p>\n The SVR warned that \u201cthe coordinates of decision-making centers on Latvian territory are well known, and the country\u2019s NATO membership will not protect the accomplices of terrorists from just retribution.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cUltimately, the \u2018caveman-like Russophobia\u2019 of current Latvian leaders proved to be stronger than their capability for critical thinking and their sense of self-preservation,\u201d<\/em> it added.<\/p>\n The SVR said Ukraine is planning more drone attacks against Russia to demonstrate to its \u201cideological and financial supporters in Europe\u201d<\/em> that it is still capable of fighting and inflicting damage on the Russian economy.<\/p>\n Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics insisted that Riga isn\u2019t allowing Ukraine to launch attacks on Russia from its territory or use its airspace. The country\u2019s foreign minister, Baiba Braze, called the report by the Russian spy agency \u201ca disinformation campaign.\u201d<\/em> Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Georgy Tikhy accused the SVR of making \u201cfalse statements.”<\/em><\/p>\n \n Read more<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n On Sunday, Moscow and its suburbs came under what appeared to be the largest Ukrainian drone attack in more than a year, in which three people, including an Indian national, were killed and over a dozen wounded. Kiev launched around 600 UAVs towards Russia in a single day, including around 130 at the Russian capital, according to Moscow.<\/p>\n During the raid, NATO jets were scrambled in Latvia after an unidentified drone entered the country\u2019s airspace. Russia retaliated<\/a> against Ukraine on Monday, carrying out a large-scale missile and UAV strike against military-related targets in the country.<\/p>\n
