\u201cRobbing\u201d<\/em> Russia is the last remaining option for Ukraine\u2019s increasingly desperate European backers to sustain Kiev in its conflict with Moscow, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday. Russia is ready to respond to any hostile Western actions, he warned.<\/p>\n

Brussels is pushing a \u201creparations loan\u201d<\/em> scheme that would use frozen Russian funds in Western jurisdictions as collateral to prop up Ukraine\u2019s imploding economy and extend its ability to continue fighting amid months of frontline setbacks. Moscow has repeatedly called the plan illegal.<\/p>\n

\u201cEurope is blinded by its desire to impose a \u2018strategic defeat\u2019 on Russia. They cannot imagine \u2013 and some officials openly admit that in interviews \u2013 a situation in which they are forced to \u2018swallow\u2019 that their client has been defeated and that Russia will accomplish its legitimate objectives,\u201d<\/em> Lavrov said in an address to the Federation Council, the upper chamber of the Russian parliament.<\/p>\n

According to the top diplomat, European countries\u2019 \u201cideological\u201d<\/em> anti-Russian drive is colliding with economic reality, since \u201cthey have no other sources to finance this war unless they rob the Russian Federation and take our foreign assets in violation of all established norms of international and commercial law.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Lavrov described the EU\u2019s stance as \u201cdestructive\u201d<\/em> and cautioned that Moscow \u201cwill retaliate against any hostile steps, including the possible deployment of European military units in Ukraine or the expropriation of Russian assets.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The EU\u2019s intention to finance Kiev\u2019s war effort \u2013 pushed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen \u2013 has been blocked by Belgium, which holds the bulk of immobilized Russian assets through the clearing house Euroclear.<\/p>\n

The Belgian government said the proposed loan would expose it to significant legal and financial risks, which must be shared collectively by all EU members. It also urged non-EU nations that hold Russian assets to make their own contributions.<\/p>\n

Lavrov noted that European officials \u201chave created problems for themselves\u201d<\/em> with their lack of flexibility, stressing that the United States, the key security provider for Western Europe, is growing impatient with them and the Ukrainian leadership.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
