The former Ukrainian stronghold was cleared of enemy troops earlier on Thursday, according to the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Troops have been going door-to-door to provide assistance to the civilians remaining the city, the MOD said in a statement later in the day.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLocal residents greet the Russian servicemen and thank them for liberating the city. The soldiers deliver food, drinking water, and medicine,\u201d<\/em> it said.<\/p>\n<p>Civilians are also offered the opportunity to be evacuated to temporary accommodation away from the front line, where they receive all necessary assistance, it added.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously, Russian sappers are demining the area.<\/p>\n<p>The fortified Donbass city had seen sporadic fighting since 2022. Taking Seversk opens up the way for Russian forces to advance on the key cities of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, both of which are major hubs for the Ukrainian military.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n        <span><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n            <img src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"RT\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/youtubexyoutube.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/693ae6a520302715a44d7bce.png\"><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/russia\/629329-russia-liberates-seversk-donbass\/\">Russian forces liberate key Donbass city \u2013 MOD (VIDEO)<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Russian troops are in fact already moving toward Slavyansk, the commander of Russia\u2019s 3rd Army Corps, Lieutenant General Igor Kuzmenkov, told President Vladimir Putin at a meeting on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Putin noted that with a <em>\u201csteady and regular\u201d<\/em> liberation of settlements in Russia\u2019s Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions, <em>\u201cthe strategic initiative is entirely in the hands of the Russian Armed Forces.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Russian forces have taken dozens of settlements in the new regions, as well as in Ukraine\u2019s Kharkov, Sumy and Dnepropetrovsk regions since the start of November.
